Ferguson Associate Wins National Safe Driver of the Year Award

NEWPORT NEWS, VA—Ferguson is proud to announce that Martin Key, an associate from the Bowling Green, Kentucky branch, has been selected as the National Safety Council’s Safe Driver of the Year for the Class B category. Key received the award at the Council’s Annual Safety Awards banquet on June 5 in Atlanta, Georgia.

According to the National Safety Council, member organizations are encouraged to submit driver nominations. Nominees are judged on the following criteria: number of years employed, miles driven/hours behind the wheel, accidents for the year 2005, career accidents, attendance and the type of authorized vehicle.  Key, a commercial delivery driver and 18-year Ferguson associate, has logged almost 33,000 hours and nearly 1.8 million miles. He has a perfect professional and personal driving record, with zero citations, violations or at-fault accidents.

Mitchell Hardin, manager of Ferguson’s Bowling Green branch, said: “Whenever Martin (Key) leaves the warehouse, I know he will use his best judgment and will not only ensure the safety of himself, but also that of everyone around him.”  When Key received news of his award, he encouraged everyone to “take that extra minute or five minutes to be safe. Not only with driving, but in every job you do. You are worth it!”

In addition to Key, four other Ferguson drivers were nominated for the award: Bobby Morrison, Hampton, VA; Jessie Parks, Charlotte, NC; Richard Smith, Atlanta/Roswell, GA; and Steven Madden, Raleigh, NC. These four drivers were recognized by the Council as “Distinguished Safe Drivers.”

John Stegeman, Ferguson president and CEO, congratulated Key on his “huge accomplishment,” noting that Key has set a very high standard for all of our drivers.  He added that “Ferguson is proud to have not just one, but many drivers who provide outstanding customer service and promote safety as a priority.”
